Spain are now the World Champions, and they rightfully deserved it. They dominated most of the proceedings in the Final yesterday and looked like the team who wanted to score a goal.
I am definitely disappointed with the result as the men in blue clearly faltered and looked out for sorts in the most important game of the tournament. The fact that they have become the only team in the tournament history to not take a shot at the goal in the first 90 minutes of the game is a testimony for their poor and listless performance. The Messi magic was not to be seen anywhere and Argentina was not the team we wanted to see in a World Cup final. Dibu Martinez was brilliant but looked like he was fighting a lone battle. No comebacks, no twisters, no thrills, no moments to relive or relish about. None whatsoever. In fact, the passion to win was absent.
It was one of the most boring and pale World Cup finals I have ever watched, but not taking away anything from Spain. They did not play scintillating football, there was nothing extraordinary about their game but the intent was present. Aggressive, ball control and possession, creating opportunities – Spain was all over Argentina. It looked like Argentina was more focused on fouls and abuse, rather than scoring – the approach was baffling, to say the least. It wasn’t just being defensive, it was more about the strategy that went all wrong. Or the lack of it that had a more profound impact on the outcome of the game.
Spain are worthy World Champions, and for all the right reasons. Despite the result, Messi will remain the greatest ever but will be overtly disappointed with his team’s performance. For those (including myself) waiting to witness another immortal Messi moment in a World Cup, not sure if that might happen again. Not everyone gets to bid goodbye with a perfect script, so let’s leave it there.
Spanish celebrations are on for World Cup glory, and congratulations are in order. Well played, Spain. Muchas gracias, for some great football and consistently upholding the pride of this sport.
